Arrival of Hryhory and Jan Balamutowski to Canada and more

Harry (Hrhory) Balamutowski came to Canada in 1910. He was 35 years old.

He came with his brother Jan, aged 26 years old. They sailed from Trieste on board the ship Eugenia and arrived at Ellis Island on April 10, 1910. They were from the village of Trubcyhn / Trypchen in West Ukraine. I don't know what method of transportation they used to come to Canada from the United States.

Both Harry and Jan left their wives behind. Harry's wife Anna aged 35, and their children, Maria aged 9, Peter aged 6, and Elizabeth aged 3, arrived the following year on October 21, 1911. They sailed from Hamburg, Germany to Quebec on board the Willehad.

The story has been brought forward to this site as follows:

HRYHORY BALAMATOWSKI / ANNA DEMBROWSKI FAMILY

Hryhory Balamatowski (Balamutowski (ska in the feminine form)) was born in the village of Trubczyn (Polish) /Trypchen (Ukrainian) in the district of Borszczow (Polish) / Borschiv (Ukrainian), in West Ukraine. He was born on November 30, 1875 to Ivan and Gustina (n.Turanska) Balamatowski. I have been told the name could have been Balamut, but it was better to have a Polish name because of what was happening in the country at that time. (Eugene or Terry Balamatowski mentioned hearing it from Mary Batulla).

Hryhory was baptized in the Greek Catholic faith. He had a brother John who came to Canada, he changed his last name to Dotsky, and his wife's name was Julia. There was one brother who remained in Europe (I don't know his name).

      UKRAINIAN CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

Ukrainian Christmas festivities begin on Christmas Eve December 24 or January 6 according to the Julian calendar. There are special foods and customs, which reach back to antiquity. The rituals of Christmas Eve are dedicated to God, the welfare of the family and to the remembrance of ancestors. Dinner did not start until the appearance of the first star which is believed to be the Star of Bethlehem.

Traditionally there was hay spread under the table and sometimes under the table-cloth to remember Christ was born in a manger. The table always has one extra place-setting for the deceased family members whose souls, it was believed come on Christmas Eve and partake of the food.

There are 12 meatless courses in the Christmas Eve supper each one dedicated to one of Christ'

      LATKOWCE

The following statistics are from a book by the Shevenko Scientific Society.

Latkowce (Polish) / Latkivci (Ukrainian) is the village where Anna Dembrowski was born in 1875.

The village was located in the county of Borschiv, West Ukraine. Many of the people in Latkowce worked for an estate owner named Kimmelman.

There were 538 acres of farmland cultivated out of a total of 636. I do not know how much belonged to the estate.

The village had a one-room school house, and while under Austrian rule, students were taught in Polish. Classes were taught in both Ukrainian and Polish when Poland was in power. Education was limited, particularly for girls.
