    • Owned and operated by Ancestry.com, Newspapers.com is the largest online newspaper archive consisting of 644 million+ pages of historical newspapers from 20,700+ newspapers from around the United States and beyond. Newspapers provide a unique view of the past and can help us understand and connect with the people, events and attitudes of an earlier time. The archives have become a constantly growing resource that already consists obituariesf more than 1 BILLION records on Ancestry itself.

At Newspapers.com it's easy and convenient to search or browse the collection to find news, notices of births, marriages and deaths, sports, comics and much more. Our high quality digital images and powerful viewer provide the best look at these historical papers and make it easy to print, save and share what you find.

Newspapers and periodicals are the day-to-day diaries of community events and include stories of the famous and ordinary people. Beyond much-sought obituaries, newspapers tell us about births, marriages, engagements, school, sports and organizational events, accounts of accidents, and what was going on in the local courts and more.

Your host has chosen to consolidate many of the Ancestry "Sources" related to this repository as identified in the source data for a given family tree provided in any given exported / extracted data set. This has been done in order to reduce the confusion caused by the practice leading to the reader being unable to appreciate the overall variety of the repository, seeing, instead, only detailed references to specific publications, editions, and pages; details that add no value to the citation without being able to see the actual page.

*** PLEASE NOTE: These details have been maintained at the citation level.***

Similar in many ways to the way Ancestry has handled citations for its Find a Grave property, source records related to this repositiory are (somewhat) artificially fractured. Further confusing the matter, the information provided in the exported / extracted files as a citation does not directly reference the records collection, even though the repository is identified (which is NOT the case for other repositories!).

As is the case for Find a Grave references, the somewhat artificial sources are being creating around "focused" records collections based on a variety of attributes; e.g.:

      - geography
      -- USA
      -- Canada
      -- Ireland
      -- Newfoundland
      -- Western Michigan
      -- etc
      - subject / event
      -- birth
      -- marriage
      -- death
      -- etc

This, despite the fact the true records, indexed and fully searchable, are all stored in the one online property: Newspapers.com. In fact, this approach helps optimize both the indices and the user interface., so their efforts are not entirely without merit.

Ancestry recognizes in many ways the value offered to family history researchers and professional genealogists by these archives. This, to the point that they offer a variety of high level means of accessing them. For instance, here are but SOME of the ways they have organized the ENORMOUS number of records of this type to make finding the RIGHT ones easier:

      - the "Newspapers and periodicals" category (nearly 1500 record collections on 20210825)
      - an inventory of their "Historical Newspapers" Collection:
      - ageneral presentation of their Newspaper resources and a "global" search feature

With this embarrassment of riches, Ancestry members are very well served in this area!

      *** OF NOTE ***:

As a demonstration or taste of the value of the wealth of riches available in even just ONE such archive, Ancestry offers FREE AND PUBLIC access to ONE record collection, the one for "The Ottawa Journal", specifically the indexed and searchable Birth, Marriage and Death Notices from the period 1885-1980
