Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine,. Lviv was created in November 1939 under the name of the Central Archive of Ancient Acts in Lviv on the basis of archives that existed before the Second World War - the Archive of Ancient Acts of. Lviv, the Zemsky Archive, as well as a number of departmental, corporate and private collections. He kept the materials of the city self-government of Lviv, starting from the 14th century, act books of the city and zemstvo courts of the 15th-18th centuries, etc. It was subordinated to the archival department of the NKVD of the Ukrainian SSR in the Lviv region. On June 24, 1941, the archive was reorganized into a branch of the Central State Historical Archive of the Ukrainian SSR. However, due to the beginning of the war, the decision was not implemented. During the German occupation, the archive continued its work as the Archive of the City of Lviv and was subordinated to the Archive Department of the Governor General in Krakow. During 1943-1944, the most valuable documents of the archive were exported to Germany. In 1944-1945, the archive existed as a department of ancient acts of the Lviv Regional State Archives. In the period 1946-1947, the main part of the documents returned to Lviv. Since 1946, the archive again began to operate as a branch of the Central State Historical Archive of the Ukrainian SSR.
