How Canadian Recruiters Shaped Prairie Settlement
When Manitoba entered Confederation in 1870, the new province was vast, sparsely populated, and strategically important. Canadian leaders feared that if the prairies remained empty, American expansion might move northward. Their solution was ambitious and deliberate: populate the West quickly with farmers, tradesmen, and families who could build stable agricultural communities. To accomplish this, Canada developed an organized and far-reaching recruitment system
