When the City of Ottawa closed its Lower Town cemeteries (Barracks Hill Cemetery: 1788-1844 and Sandy Hill Cemetery: 1844-1872), His Excellency Joseph Eugène Guigues, first Bishop of Ottawa (1848), purchased 20 acres of land from Mr. Bradley for Catholic burial. This land was to be known as Notre-Dame cemetery. It is the oldest and largest Catholic cemetery in Ottawa. Currently, the 20 hectares of the cemetery constitute the final resting place of more than 130,000 individuals.
