Jeannette leaves to cherish her memory her husband Alphonse, her children Normand (Shelly) Durand, Paulette (Garry) Kosheluk, Alice (Robert) Roy, grandchildren Crystal (Steve) Derworiz, Jonathan Durand, Carolyn Kosheluk, Mélanie, Carine and Josée Roy, and great-granddaughter Aspen Derworiz. She also leaves to mourn her brother Maurice Sénécal, brother-in-law Charles Durand, sisters-in-law Germaine Durand, Georgette Durand, Suzanne Durand, Elida Ferguson, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jeannette was predeceased by her parents André and Antonia Sénécal, in-laws Jean and Albertine Durand, brother Roger Sénécal, sisters Doris Verreault, Irène Grondin, and Gertrude Rowan, brothers-in-law Armand Durand, Léo Verreault, and Norman Grondin, and sisters-in-law Olive Sénécal and Jeannine Sénécal. Jeannette was born on June 1, 1936 in Kincaid, Saskatchewan. She would have celebrated her 80th birthday this year. The family moved to St. Eustache, Manitoba, then to St. Boniface in Winnipeg when she was a teenager. Jeannette met Alphonse in 1954 and they married on October 13, 1956. They would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this fall. Jeannette stayed home to raise her three children. Family was very important to her. She loved spending time going camping, bringing her three children to the many activities, clubs and sports that they were involved in. She volunteered many hours of her time helping out - whether it be bookkeeping, making costumes or anything else that was needed. She was very proud of her grandchildren and talked about them often. She was very excited when the first gréât-grandchild was born last fall. Celebrating birthdays and anniversaries was very important to her. You could always be guaranteed that on your birthday you would be eating a Jeannie's cake. After her children were grown Jeannette returned to work preparing income tax and retired in 2000. She enjoyed her job very much and remained friends with her former co-workers. Throughout the years she spent many hours volunteering. She was a member of numerous clubs most recently Club Eclipse and Manitoba Prairie Quilters. Jeannette was always busy going out with her many girlfriends whether it be for lunch, shopping, bingo or card parties. She loved to sew and knit and over the years made many blankets and afghans. Jeannette loved taking pictures and always had her camera ready. Every child and grandchild has their own series of photo albums that she created over the years. You could also find Mom at home in the afternoons watching her favourite soap operas. She was also a huge BlueJays fan. Jeannette and Alphonse had many friends and for years spent their weekends getting together with them to play cards. Jeannette was very active until a fall she had at home at the beginning of January. She was admitted to hospital and unfortunately did not return home. The last couple of months have been very difficult for her and the family, especially Alphonse. She is finally at peace and now we have our own personal angel to look out for us. Our family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Michelle Grzybowski and her colleagues from the Centre de Santé Saint Boniface for the care and compassion you have shown Jeannette during her brief illness. We would also like to thank all the staff on 4B at St. Boniface Hospital for the care you gave her since the beginning of January and 6AS for the care you gave her, on her last two days. In keeping with Jeannette's wishes, a funeral mass will be held at Eglise du Précieux-Sang, 200 Kenny Street on March 10, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. with l'Abbé Marcel Carrière presiding. Elle était très fière de ses petits-enfants et parlait d'eux souvent. Elle était très enchantée par la naissance de sa première arrière petite-fille l'automne passé. Jamais Jeannette n'oubliait de célébrer les anniversaires de tous ses proches, toujours avec un bon Jeannie's Cake. Les enfants devenus adolescents, Jeannette retourna au travail dans la préparation des impôts, ce qu'elle a beaucoup aimé faire jusqu'à sa retraite en 2000. Elle demeura grande amie avec ses anciens collègues. Jeannette s'est toujours impliquée dans le bénévolat à travers les années. Plus récemment, elle était membre active du Club Eclipse et le Manitoba Prairie Quilters. Jeannette adorait passer du temps avec ses amies à sortir pour le dîner, magasiner, jouer une bonne partie de cartes ou encore le bingo! Elle se plaisait à coudre et à tricoter des couvertures et afghans pour tous et chacun. On pouvait voir Jeannette toujours se promener avec sa caméra à la main, prête à prendre des photos de ses proches. Elle créea à travers les années, plusieurs albums photos pour chacun de ses enfants et ses petits-enfants! Dans les après-midi, Jeannette prenait une pause afin de regarder ses téléromans préférés à la télé ainsi que les joutes de ses preférés Blue Jays. Jeannette et Alphonse n'aimaient rien de plus que de passer leurs weekends avec leurs divers amis à jouer aux cartes. Elle demeura très active jusqu'à ce qu'elle se blesse suite à une chute à la maison. Elle a été admise à l'hôpital au début janvier et malheureusement n'a pas pu retourner à la maison. Les derniers temps ont été difficiles pour elle, Alphonse et la famille. Elle repose finalement en paix; nous avons notre propre ange au ciel qui s'occupera de nous. Notre famille aimerait remercier très sincèrement le Dr. Grzybowski ainsi que ses collègues au Centre de Santé Saint Boniface pour leur compassion et excellents soins prodigués à notre chère maman. Nous aimerions aussi remercier le personnel du 4B de l'Hôpital Saint Boniface pour les soins offerts depuis début janvier et au 6AS pour les soins donnés ses deux derniers jours. He also leaves to mourn his sisters, Germaine and Georgette Durand; sister-in-law Suzanne Durand, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Alphonse was predeceased by his wife Jeannette (Sénécal); his parents, Jean and Albertine Durand; and his brothers, Armand and Charles Durand.
Alphonse was born on August 2, 1935, in Notre Dame de Lourdes, Manitoba. In 1954 at 19 years of age he moved to Winnipeg where he met Jeannette. They married on October 13, 1956, and raised three children. Alphonse and Jeannette spent 59 years together before her passing in March 2016.
In 1954 Alphonse moved to Winnipeg and enrolled in the Dairy Program at the University of Manitoba. Upon his graduation he found employment at Silverwood Dairies for whom he worked for 15 years. In 1970 he started working for Winnipeg Transit until his retirement in 1991.
When his children were younger he volunteered at the Glenwood Community Club presiding on various committees and coaching hockey and baseball. One of Alphonse’s favourite hobbies was woodworking. He built a shop which was attached to the garage at their home on Horace Street. He spent many hours of his time making wooden toys and games for his grandchildren and spoon racks, lawn ornaments and many other items which he sold at craft sales. His other passion was his vegetable garden. He was especially proud of his "Big Al" tomatoes which he grew every year from seeds that he dried from the previous year's harvest. Alphonse also enjoyed his weekly visits to the casino that he used to take with his cousin Noël Durand.
Unfortunately, Alphonse was no longer able to stay in his apartment at Place Des Meurons and moved to St. Norbert Nursing home for a short period of time, then subsequently at Actionmarguerite St. Boniface until his passing.
The family would like to thank all the staff on 4DE for the care, compassion and support given to Alphonse and his family during his stay.
A small private family gathering has been held and interment has taken place at the St. Boniface Cemetery, presided by Monseigneur Noël Delaquis.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Alphonse’s name to Actionmarguerite St. Boniface or a charity of your choice.
