ETHICAL DEATH CARE in care of arrangements

-- As published in the Winnipeg Free Press on Feb 8, 2025

      -----------------------------

It is with deep sadness we announce Ken’s passing at the Fred Douglas Lodge, after a courageous battle with MSA (multiple system atrophy).

Ken was predeceased by his parents, Pauline and Alex; and recently, by his sister Virginia. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years, Georgina; daughter Shelley (Tom); grandsons Garren (Shauna), Ryan (Brittany); great-grandchildren Lakelynn and Kaysen; and brother-in-law Wayne.

Ken spent his childhood and school years in Winnipeg Beach, before moving to Winnipeg for work in the mid 1950’s. He was a dedicated employee, working as a quality control inspector/manager for 42 years at Phillips/Temro. Not long after retirement, he joined Crown Honda as a shuttle driver for ten plus years.

Georgina and Ken met in 1956 and married in June of 1959. The two were inseparable for most of their 65 years together. Ken was a doting husband, right up until MSA stripped him of his mobility. Georgina then reciprocated, taking complete control of their day to day lives. It was a difficult journey, keeping him at home until no longer able to manage.

In July 1960, Shelley, his only child was born. Only children need a companion, and that he was, a best friend, taking her everywhere and providing the best homelife anyone could wish for.

Ken, (the saint) shared his home with three women, a wife, a daughter and his mother-in-law, Anne for 27 years. This may have been a challenge for some, but his ability to tune things out and go with the flow got him through.

Ken was a loving grandfather, never missing a band concert, sporting event or important milestone. His great-grandchildren’s visits were often the highlight of his days.

An avid sports enthusiast, Ken played baseball, curling and golf. He was a super fan of the Bombers and the Jets. He held Jets 1.0 season tickets and watched the games up until his final weeks.

There wasn’t a year the family didn’t vacation; be it Edmonton, Radium Hot Springs, Chicago and more. He enjoyed the casino, especially their trips to Vegas.

Ken was very meticulous, which was evident by his parklike yard and trunk organization system. Everything had a place.

Ken was devoted to his family, one of the kindest, gentlest, caring souls. His quick wit, sense of humour and calm disposition was admired by all.

A remarkable man, an amazing role model, he will be greatly missed.

Cremation has taken place and as per Ken’s wishes, a private family interment will be held in the spring of 2025.

A special thank you to his homecare team, Eddie and nurse Don. The excellent care received at Fred Douglas lodge on Burrows will also not be forgotten. Thank you to all the wonderful staff.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to U-TURN Parkinson’s, 525 Beresford Avenue, Winnipeg MB R3L 1J4.
