DNA shows that the Shiness Mathesons were Picts, rather than Vikings or Celts. A burn ran by the broch into the loch, its exit forming a fine sheltered little harbour for boats which were no doubt used to catch salmon and trout. It was sheltered from the north-east winds by a long range of hills and from the south-west by a higher range. Deer were plentiful.
