Irene entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre-Dame and graduated as a registered nurse from Misericodia Hospital, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Irene's religious name was Sister Arthur Marie. Irene nursed in Saskatchewan, Cameroun and Zambia, Africa. She also worked in Ponteix at the Foyer St. Joseph and then as chaplain at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Later as chaplain at the University Hospital in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.
