RITA MATTHES, BORN: MAY 03, 1924, DATE OF PASSING: OCT 17, 2002; Rita Matthes passed away at the Health Sciences Centre. Rita leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband John, her children, Murray (Solveig), Barry (Rose), Derek (Heather), and Kelly (George) and six grandchildren. She is also survived by three sisters, Alice, Lee, Ida and predeceased by three sisters and three brothers. Rita was born in Lac Du Bonnet on May 3, 1924. Afterward she moved to Winnipeg where she met and married John. Subsequently they resided in Emerson, Germany and then back to Winnipeg. She was always an active member of the community. Rita was loving, kind hearted and devoted to her family. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 22 at 1:00 p.m. in the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 401 Kildare Ave. W. Interment to follow at Transcona Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ritas memory to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, 101- 55 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 1L8. JOHN EDMUND MATTHES, BORN: NOV 03, 1919, DATE OF PASSING: APR 24, 2003; Our family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of John on Thursday, April 24, 2003. He was predeceased by his loving wife Rita in 2002. His memory will be cherished by his children, Murray (Solveig), Barry (Rose), Derek (Heather), and Kelly (George). Papa will be sadly missed by his six grandchildren, Kerri, Trevor, Dana, Sterling, Andrew and Sarah. He is survived by sisters, Agnes (Harry), Ruby (Steve), Elsie (Ed), and Ester. Born November 3, 1919 in Winnipeg, John grew up in Elmwood where he went to school. Afterwards he enlisted first in the army, then the navy. After the war he married his sweetheart Rita and worked for the City Transit System. He then moved the family to Emerson, MB where he took a position of Immigration Officer. While there he and his family participated in many community activities. He was involved in hockey, baseball and a member of the school board. He has often reminisced of the good times and friendships formed in Emerson. In 1963, he moved the family to Cologne, Germany and took a position with the Foreign Service. Upon his return to Canada, he continued his position with Immigration in Winnipeg. After a successful career with the Public Service he retired in 1980. During his retirement he enjoyed gardening, cooking, travelling, entertaining his children and grandchildren with his stories, and walking his dog. He lived his life to the fullest and will be greatly missed by all that knew him. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 29 at 2:00 p.m. in the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 401 Kildare Ave., Transcona. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of ones choice. NEIL BARDAL INC. in care of arrangements
