Malcolm, Donald and their sister Flora and families, left Scotland on the "Mars", from Tobermory, Isle of Mull in July of 1818. The Mars was the same ship that fought in the battle of Trafalger against Napoleon. It was common to use re-fillted war ships to transport emigrants to the colonies. The Mars left Tobermoray in either late June or early July and landed in Quebec City in September. The voyage took over nine weeks. The ship carried a total of 36 families, at least 5 were of the Baptist faith and the Elder Dougald Campbell travelled with them. It is believed that the Mars also landed at Pictou, Nova Scotia in August. Once in Quebec, the families travelled to Montreal by steamship, then on to Kingston by bateau and cart. Another boat took them across Lake Ontario to Queenston, then carts carried them to Fort Erie. From there they travelled by schooner across Lake Erie to Port Glasgow. An old resident of Aldborough recalled many years later that Donald McAlpine was a man of great strength and carried heavy barrels of salt up the cliffs of Port Glasgow. Upon arrival they petitoned for land from Colonel Talbot. Eventually Malcolm settled on 50 acres on Con. 13, lot 18 NE (right across from his brother) in Aldborough. The family left Scotland because of religious persecution, so the legend says. It appears that Donald, Malcolm and their sisters were Church of Scotland until about 1813. At this time itinerant Baptist ministers were travelling throughout Argyll preaching the gospel. The family converted to the Baptist faith. It is believed that the landowners (Campbells) were none too pleased with their crofters conversion and made their life very difficult. Legend has it that many Scots from Knapdale emigrated due to religious persecution. In 1819, their sister Mary and her husband Donald McGugan also settled in Aldborough. Malcolm left the township on June 30, 1835 after a fight with Donald over religion. His lands were then deeded to Flora. Malcolm was thought to have been killed by a falling tree ~ 1861 Census - Euphemia Twp., Lambton Co., Ontario.
