ONALD CLIFFORD JOHNSON, BORN: MAR 06, 1930, DATE OF PASSING: MAY 09, 2011; With his family at his side, Don Johnson slipped away peacefully in his sleep on May 9, 2011 in Winnipeg after a very brief time dealing with cancer. Born in Winnipeg on March 6, 1930 Don was a lover of life and opportunity. As a young man, he travelled to British Columbia doing several jobs ranging from farming to logging, and finally working at his uncle's jewellery store. He then became a watchmaker/ jeweller and worked in Winnipeg for the T. Eaton Co. When he was a roller skating instructor, Don met a beautiful young lady named Shirley Louise Moran. He would later marry her, have three children and eventually they shared 63 years together. It would turn out to be a life that they could never have imagined. Don moved his family to Thompson, MB in 1963 as the north was a place of opportunity. What he found in Thompson was an undeveloped mining town that needed volunteers and people with a sense of Community Pride. With his wife, he created Don Johnson Jewellers and Johnson's Plaza Florist amongst other ventures. For seven years, he hosted an hour and a half radio program each morning on CHTM called The Dawn Patrol (a little play on words). Don had the utmost of dignity and was a very proud man. He believed in getting involved and making his world a better place for all concerned. A few noteworthy volunteer positions were, the President of the Thompson Rotary Club and an active member for 48 years, and a proud recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award and Rotarian of the year, the president of the Chamber of Commerce, President of the Highway 6 Association, and President of the Nickel Days Board. In 1980, Don had the honour of being invited to be a group leader for HRH Duke of Edinburgh 5th Commonwealth Study Conference of Canada. Don was the recipient of the 1997 Manitoba Travel Award for Innovation regarding his involvement in the building of the Rotary Suspension Bridge at Pisew Falls. His grandkids always called it Grampa's Bridge . Also Don and Louise were founding members of the Thompson Community Foundation. Don was an avid fisherman and hunter and a great supporter of Ducks Unlimited. With his son, he travelled for over 30 years from Thompson to Reston MB for the hunt. He would always say We don't travel a 1000 km's for a roast... we make the journey to spend time with our friends . He was happiest when fishing at the North Grassy River and sharing life stories, while watching nature. This wouldn't be complete without mentioning his Buns . For 37 years, Don made homemade buns and it was common to hear Don you've got the nicest buns in town ! Retirement meant spending time in the summer at Paint Lake and Grand Marais and wintering at their home in Naples, Florida. Don/Dad/Grandpa/Mr. Johnson: he went by many names but in each capacity he led by example. Always doing the right thing and a great sense of fair play was his style and his expectations for others. His legacy was a life of sharing those standards with his wife, his family and his community. Don is survived by his wife of 59 years Shirley Louise (nee Moran), his daughters Gwen (Derek Stone), Nancy (Randy Lynds), son Don (Luz Alvarez), grandsons Sean and Terry, granddaughters Stacey (Henry) and Heidi (Jeff) and great-grandson Stone. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all nurses and staff in the Palliative Care Unit at the St. Boniface Hospital. Your warmth and compassion was greatly appreciated. In keeping with Don's last wishes, a family gathering has been held and cremation has taken place. If friends so desire, Don has requested donations made to The Thompson Community Foundation http://www.thompsonfoundation.mb.ca or Ducks Unlimited of Canada www.ducks.ca/helpduc/donate/index.html
