MARCEL HAMONIC, BORN: MAR 29, 1925, DATE OF PASSING: DEC 09, 2022; On December 9, 2022, at the age of 97, our dear husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Marcel Pierre Joseph Hamonic, passed away peacefully after a short illness.".
Left to mourn and celebrate his life are his wife of 51 years, Janet (Dunn), and his children Marcel Jr. (Kim), Maxine (Ken), Andrea Kolody (Ray), Lindsay (Marc), and son-in-law David Brown, as well as grandchildren Samantha (Pete), Jennifer (Brent), Matthew (Anna), Joel (Leah), Stephane (Stephanie), Pascale (Eugene), Gillian (Nick), Justine, Paige, and Piper and great-grandchildren Kasia, Sienna, Jakob, Carmène, Colette, Xavier, and Mateo. He is also survived by his sisters Béatrice Arpin (Gaëtan) and Thérèse (Bourgeois). Marcel was predeceased by his first wife Yolande (Lavergne), daughter Carmène (Brown), brothers Robert, Eugène, Léon, Edouard, and Jean, as well as sisters Rolande and Cécile (Marcotte).
Marcel was born on March 29, 1925, in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan and was one of ten children. He was raised on the farm and the family moved to Dufrost, Manitoba during the "Dirty Thirties". He was a dedicated student, and pursued his studies from elementary in Dufrost, to the Royal Officer Training Course (ROTC), followed by his Bachelor of Arts in Latin-Philosophy in 1945 at St. Boniface College, where he was an academic medalist.
Marcel then continued his studies in General Medicine at the Université de Laval (graduated 1951), then specialized in Pathology at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio from 1951-54. He attended the Cleveland Forensic Medico-Legal Institute in 1955 and was a Fellow of the American College of Pathology (FACP).
Upon his return to Manitoba after completing his studies, Marcel began his career in the department of Pathology at St. Boniface Hospital, where he worked for 35 years. He was a natural teacher and shared his knowledge as an Associate Professor of Pathology and Assistant Professor of Surgery (Orthopedics) at the University of Manitoba and wrote numerous medical articles with colleagues in his field of specialization. Marcel also served as Assistant to the Chief Medical Examiner of Manitoba and was the Head of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at St. Boniface Hospital for 13 years. Later in his career, he co-founded the Provencher Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, where he continued to work after his retirement from the hospital.
Marcel was a very active young man and loved all sorts of sports and being outdoors. He played baseball, football, tennis, and enjoyed curling. He was an avid hunter and spent a great deal of time with his friends in northern Manitoba or the US chasing birds or deer. His favourite sport was fishing, which he enjoyed throughout his life. He loved travelling to the family camp at Waterhen to fish for big walleye, and flying to Great Bear Lake, Alberta for lake trout. Marcel especially enjoyed the northern trips with Janet to Victoria Island, which is 300 miles south of the Magnetic North Pole, to fish for lake trout, arctic char, and grayling. He passed on his love of fishing to all his children, and many happy hours were spent trolling in the boat at Waterhen or West Waterhen. He was always lucky in the boat but often passed his line to the young anglers, so they had the chance to reel in a nice one.
Marcel and Janet loved to travel and enjoyed trips to England, Austria, Argentina, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. Hobbies were a big part of Marcel's life, and he collected microscopes, stamps, beer bottles, and coins from the Canadian Mint. He passed on many stamps and coins to his grandchildren and spent hours organizing and sorting stamps to share. In his retirement years, he indulged in reading as his favourite pastime and adding to his collections.
Many thanks to the staff at Actionmarguerite St. Boniface for their care and compassion during the past two years.
In keeping with the family's wishes, a funeral service will be held in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, if friends or family desire, a donation of goods or a gift-in-kind may be made to Siloam Mission at donategoods@siloam.ca.
