With deep sadness we announce the passing of Dorothy Forrest, with loving family at her side. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Lewis of 54 years; granddaughter Santana Cornejo; her siblings, George and Alexander Cote, and Rose Roebuck. She is survived by her children, Steven (Kim), Donna Cornejo Otte (Frank) and Jeffrey (Tina); grandchildren, Andre and Brendon Cornejo; Alexandra, Reed and Rachel Forrest. Born and raised in Winnipeg, she made lifelong friends, Lorraine and Muriel. At age 14, she worked to help raise her younger siblings. After several years of marriage, Lewis and Dorothy bought their first home on Victor Street and started their family. In addition, other family and friends lived there too. Dorothy had a nurturing heart and was always caring for others. She attended St. Andrew's United Church on Elgin Avenue. She was an active member of the "Elginettes" service group, involved in many church functions including bazaars and the annual spring tea. A seamstress for many years, she advanced to be a garment cutter - considered to be a man's job - where Dorothy proved her worth. Later, she worked at a daycare within St. Andrew's Place, then moved into an outreach worker position at Health Action Centre, located in the same building. Having a strong belief that "education is never a waste of time" she went to Red River College, taking the Management Development Program, accounting, computers - the list goes on. She became the Business Manager at Health Action Centre, and was also the jack of all trades, covering at reception, payroll, plumber, etc. Luckily at age 60 she retired! She had a love for camping, first using the McKanes camper, then later a family trailer. Camping alongside the Jensen family where all sports or games changed into something else entirely. Ever since those days, it is said "let her win, or there will be consequences". During her working years (then into retirement) Lewis and Dorothy spent 17 glorious years at Spruce Sands campground, engaged in family get-togethers, camp fires, baking friendship muffins, fishing and reading. She truly loved the times her kids and grandkids came out to the lake, showing each of them how to fish. Every time it was time to go back to the city, she would feel sad and have a tear in her eye. At large family gatherings at Christmas or New Year's, she was famous for her sweet and sour meatballs and of course her corn fritters. Dorothy liked her getaways. She enjoyed visits with her siblings, and her travels to BC, often staying with nieces, Gale and Carol and nephew Rick. She loved going out to her luxury camping at Wallace Lake, where she enjoyed fishing, reading, doing puzzles and helping out. The family would like to thank Dr. J. Clendenan for her care, understanding and support, as well as the staff at Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg. Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 22, 2018 at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetes Association, CancerCare Manitoba, or the Alzheimer Society.
