Louise, Joseph and Napoleon were part of a large migration of Canadians from Quebec and New England occurring after the Manitoba Territory was created from 1870 on. This is mid-western Canada, but it was often referred to by Easterners, erroneously, as 'the Canadian North-West'.

Louise and her husband Paul Girardin went first, sometime dureing the period of 1875-1880. Her letters led to Joseph's interest and decision to become a pioneer. he chose to settle in St. Alphonse, near Pembina Mountain, somewhere near the northern swing of the Pembina River, about 85 miles north of the US border, in the center of Manitoba, southern border. Surrounding St. Alphonse, are hamlets like Baldur, Swan Lake, Bruxelles, which had a settlement of Belgians, from which Dosithe's wife, Mary Fifi came.

Joseph and his two sons, Louis and Dosithe, probaby bought a 'homestead', a property of 160 acres, sometime after 1878. Napoleon followed in 1890, buying his own homestead (160 acres).

Louis, Joseph's son, was one of the first to leave St. Alphonse for Elie. He married Lea Dufresne, daughter of Elie Dufresne, first to build a house in what would be called later the village of Elie. Louis and Lea's house was the second house built, next to her father's. Pioneering and farming, mush not have gone well at St. Alphonse, for there was a general Exodus of Bernardins out of St. Alphonse to the vicinity of Elie. After Louis had left, his father Joseph moved to Elie, settling his family there, working as a carpenter in this area, but most often in Winnipeg. He would take the train, back and forth, coming home every two or three weeks for weekends and vacation periods. he was not alone in Winnipeg for Louise and her family were there and Louis had gotten a job as a bartender in the city of Winnipeg. They came home to their families every now and then, but they needed to work in Winnipeg because they needed money for their families. Joseph was much in demand as a builder of houses for relatives and friends and he did a lot of shingle work on large buildings, like the abattoir in Winnipeg.

Napoleon was basically a farmer, but a skilled worker with all tools as was Dosithe, a blacksmith, who did beautiful woodwork, also. Napoleon moved to Elie in 1896 and bought a 'homestead' there, a mile north of Elie, which is still occupied by his grandson, Rene.

Edouard, who had married his first cousin, Catherine Bernardin, Napoleon's daughter, moved to Elie about 1896, built a very solid redbrick store (that is still standing). The store attracted others to come live in Elie. In this way the hamlet of three or four houses, expanded eventually to a village of 350 houses.

According to Sr. St. Lucille, who wrote a biography of her father Charles, his first visit to his uncle Joseph happened when Carles was 21. That would be in 1879 when Joseph was at St. Alponse.

Thowships at this time were laid out in 36 square mile units. If you had the money (16 dollars an acre, about) you could buy a mile square mile, 640 acres, called a section.
