GEORGE W. MYKETA 1935 - 2008 George passed away peacefully on March 27, 2008, at Winnipeg Beach. George was predeceased by his loving wife Joan in 1994, brother Nick, and his mother and father Annie and Michael Myketa. George will be deeply missed by his loving children, Donna (Shawn), Peter, Christine (Mike) and his grandchildren, Emma, Rebecca, Lindsay and Kevin. He is survived by sisters, Stella (Melfort) and Evelyn (Jim) and sister-in-law Teenie and many nieces and nephews and their families. He is also survived by many of Joan's family and relatives. George was born at Winnipeg Beach in 1935 and received his elementary school and high school education at Winnipeg Beach. He then attended and graduated from Manitoba Institute of Technology as an apprentice in refrigeration and air conditioning. After working a number of years in his chosen trade, George and Joan and family moved to Winnipeg Beach where they purchased and operated George's Grocery for many years. George then became a licensed real estate salesperson and worked for Interlake Real Estate out of Gimli. In his early youth, George delivered the Free Press, peddled fish, drove a dairy milk delivery truck and worked on the boardwalk at Winnipeg Beach. After selling the store Joan and George moved to a little farm, where they built a house and raised their family. He served on town council for two terms, and loved the lake. George loved gardening, growing raspberries and asparagus and having many threshing parties with his father's old machinery. Dad was a good cook and enjoyed picking mushrooms and berries and making his own sauerkraut. He was a very exceptional handyman and loved building, repairing and tinkering in all the trades. George was a very dedicated curler and enjoyed playing recreational hockey, and was one of the founders of Winnipeg Beach Rec Centre. He was a lifelong member of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic at Winnipeg Beach where he served as custodian for many years. George loved animals and has always missed his loving black lab, Buckwheat. At his request, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. George's and Joan's ashes will be interred at the Parish Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society. Love and cherish everything and everyone - Life is too short for any other path.
