The story has been brought forward to this site as follows:

From email exchanges with Eleanore Smiley Chopp, on 2017/12/11

Mother and infant son died within a day of each other. In 1938. They both caught typhoid. The doctor / health inspector, I am not sure which, claimed that the milk on the farm was contaminated from flies.

Eugene was also living at home and was not expected to live, though he survived. The two older children, Salome and Boris, were at school and did not eat or drink what their mother and baby
      did.
