Pearl Haddad's most beautiful life came to a peaceful end in the early morning hours of January 24, 2022. The sun was rising over the cold, crisp Manitoba morning; beautiful snowflakes were falling gently when Pearl took her last breath, as she lay cradled in the arms of her loving family. Her children held her close and thanked her again and again for giving them life, loving and caring for them, being their protector, and teaching them to be strong, loyal, and resilient.
Most of all, they thanked her for being the best mother to them that she could be.
Born on the Manitoba prairie and the youngest of 16 children, Mom was the final remaining sibling of her family. Predeceased by her father James Crombie Henry (1935), her mother Catherine Emms Henry (1942), her beloved son Bruce (2000), former husband and lifelong best friend Sherrold (2020), as well as all of her siblings.
Pearl leaves to mourn her loss her remaining children, Cheryl Haddad (Wayne Lima) (Vancouver Island), Jim Haddad (Miranda Fidler), Barbara Haddad (Vancouver) and Trish Haddad ( Steve Mikos); 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and countless nieces and nephews.
On August 31, 1930, Pearl was born in the Lake Francis / Harperville area, where her family settled and farmed the land. She lost her parents at an early age; her Dad when she was five; and her Mother (who had four sons fighting overseas during the Second World War) when Pearl was 12. In spite of losing both of her parents at such an early age, Pearl found an inner strength to move forward that was evident throughout her life.
In Winnipeg, at the age of 18, she would meet, and two years later, marry the love of her life, Sherrold Haddad, with whom she built a family of five children. Together they started Holiday Chevrolet Oldsmobile Ltd, and in addition to raising five young children, she and Dad developed their business. Although Pearl and Sherrold eventually went their separate ways , they remained good friends, and always considered themselves to be family.
Having grown up on the farm in the dirty thirties, Mom had lots of stories that she would incessantly share with us, about the pranks her mischievous brothers would pull on friends, family, and even visitors. Mom also had a mischievous side to her, and she seemed to revel in sharing these almost unbelievable anecdotes. Pearl was proud of her Scottish Heritage, and when telling these stories, Pearl's impressions of her various family members would often include a Scottish Brogue.
Pearl could start up a conversation with anybody about anything; and was always happy to give you her honest opinion, whether you asked for it or not. One of Pearl's favourite topics of conversation was her grandchildren. Pearl would regale anyone and everyone with hilarious stories of her grandchild's latest hi-jinx or accomplishments.
Mom loved fashion, had great style, and was impeccably well groomed. Jackie O was her style icon and fashion compass. Once her kids were grown, a great day for Pearl was shopping at La Boutique or Holt's, followed by a facial, mani/pedi, and then getting dressed up for an evening out.
Many 1960s styles Cocktail parties were held at the family home on Paradise Bay. Herb Albert & the Tijuana Brass, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Elvis and the Beatles playing on the Hi-Fi Stereo System...Martinis and Manhattans being served...everyone in cocktail attire.
A woman ahead of her time, Mom became an ardent yoga practitioner in the early 1970s, and continued her daily practice for many decades. Even in her later years we would find her off in a corner doing her best (and succeeding) to go into a pose. She was a great Mom, and always there when we arrived home after school each and every day. She made a mean Shrimp dip and the best Christmas dinners with yummy gravy, matrimonial cake and shortbread cookies, which we all make and enjoy to this day.
As the years unfolded, Mom again confronted some large hurdles. We bore witness to her inner strength, loyalty and never ending devotion for our brother Bruce when he was ailing. She again dug deep into that reservoir to fight her own long, courageous battle, and despite the challenges of these last years, Mom's keen sense of humour, love and light managed to shine through .
During the last chapter of her life, our sister Barb was with Mom and became her primary caregiver. Barb's devoted love and care allowed Mom to remain in the comfort of her home, and offered peace of mind to the entire family. We can never repay our sister Barb for her love and dedication, and the best care that anyone could ever hope for.
Barbie doll, you are our angel on earth. And we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
A part of each of her children died along with her in her passing, but the flame of her love will forever burn brightly in each of our hearts. We love you Mom - yesterday, today, forever and always. We are honoured and privileged to have had you here as our mother for so long. We know you are cradling our brother Bruce in your arms .
And "Yes Mom".... We shall always remember to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps!
Until we meet again, Miss Pearly Girl
Our Phoenix has risen one last time.
PS: We know the secret as to who was your favourite, it was Cheryl - Bruce - Jim - Barb - Trish
