Peter was baptized and confirmed a Greek Catholic on August 3, 1919. His sponsors were John Nikorchuk and Dominica Glowachyk. Rev. A Delaere, C.S.S.R officiated.

Warrant Officer Peter Shmigelsky was in the R.C.A.F during WWII. He was killed while on an anti-submarine (U-boat) mission out of St. Eval, in England.

The plane was shot down and all the crew but one were lost at sea.

Note name change to Shmigelsky, this is the one used to enlist. He joined the Army first and then switched to the Air Force.

From information in a document supplied by Eleanor Chopp:

Kassian came to Canada around 1900 with his wife Anastasia. Papers from the Manitoba archives show his country as Austria, district of Galicia.
Austria was the ruling power at that time. This was also in the province of Borschiv. Anastasia was from the same area.

Kassian applied for entry of the property known as NE 16-17-2E in 1910 although he had been there since 1901. The land had a lot of timber (white poplar) and the government refused to let settlers onto the land until they could sell the timber. A Homestead Inspector claimed the timber would cut into 10,000 cords of wood. Three other people wished to settle on the land and were refused.

I am assuming by 1901 a fair bit of timber had been cut and Kassian was able to homestead there. Kassian was unable to read or write English and this may have been why he almost lost the farm in 1921. He should have applied for patent after five years and failed to do so. He was able to prove to the Homestead Inspector that he had been fulfilling all of the requirements of the government in cultivating the land.There were no liens or debts and they granted his patent even though it was six years after the due date.

Apparently Kassian froze his feet so badly he was unable to work the land properly for three years. He had an accident loading cord wood onto a sled which tipped over pinning him underneath. I was told he got gangrene and was forced to chop off his foot. I have no idea if this is true or not.

The condition of the land made it difficult to make much progress. The inspector suggested no action be taken against Kassian for late entry and this was accepted. The following was taken from the inspector's report:

The soil was gritty loam 4-8" in depth and underneath was clay and small stones.
Cultivating one acre of that land was equivalent to cultivating 8 acres of prairie. Some of the land was swampy but required no drainage.

The years from 1916-1921 showed they had 10 cattle in 1916, 12 in 1917, 9 in 1918, 11 in 1919, 13 in 1920, 12 in 1921,
2 hogs in each of these years and two horses in 1918 and 1919, 3 horses in 1920 and 1921.

Machinery included:
Binder, breaker, plows, hay cutter, 2 barrows, spring harrow, potato hoes, wagon, sleigh, 2 road scrapers and a hay rake.

The house was valued at $1,000, stable $300, Storehouses $30, fence around farm $150.

In 1908 Kassian sold two acres of land to the school district NE section 16-17-2E. The school was next door to the farm.

He was a pioneer member of the St. Stephen Greek Orthodox Church in Pleasant Home, Manitoba, between Komarno and Teulon. I was able to find the grave-site which is shown on records at the Manitoba Genealogical Society as NE 13-17-2E row 6. There is a cairn at the cemetary by the church, listing all the pioneers from 1899-1954 and Kasian Smygolsky is one of them.

Name spellings:

Szimiegekski (official).

Shmigelski/Shmigelski (used in later years), Symygalski, Szmygalski, Smygolsky, Shinigalsky. Migelski was found on some early records in Canada.

Kassian, Cassian, Kasijan, Kovian, Rossian.

In the 1901 census the name is listed as Migelski; Karvan, Nathi, Michalina (11 years old) and Stefania born that same year.

Michalina was not found again and if Kassian's daughter would be from a previous wife as Anastasia would have been about 12 years old. The other possibility is she was not with them but another family as there were frequent errors made in this regard. I searched and could not find her again under any names associated with this family or others of the same name.

A good way to confirm it is the family is to check the property NE 16-17-2E.

From information in a document supplied by Eleanor Chopp:

Anastasia was born in West Ukraine, but her birth/baptism certificate shows Poland as the country of birth as Poland was the ruling government when she obtained this document in 1936. Anastasia probably obtained her birth certificate at this time as naturalization had to be completed in 1936. Cassian and Anastasia both had Austria as the country of birth when they arrived in Canada as the Austria-Hungarians were in power at that time. Anastasia was 21 and Cassian 31 when they came to Canada. She was also called Matsumi, Nellie and Nastia. They had seven children:
Stefania, John, Pauline, Mary, Anne, Peter and Rosie.
Peter was 10 years old when Cassian died at the age of 61. Anastasia (aka Nellie) married again to John Bazyk (Bozyk) around 1931.



20171019:
From conversation with the Watowich clan members who were visiting Winnipeg in October, 2017, she was known affectionately as "Little Baba" by the extant family of the day.

Provided care and attention to younger family members for many years, including Pauline (nee Shmigelski), her grand-daughter and Peter Russin, Pauline's husband.
