It was described specifically or transcribed by them as "RONALD PAUL MEHMEL (1951 - 2018); Date of Passing: Nov 04, 2018; Peacefully on Sunday, November 4, 2018, with family by his side, Ron passed away at the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Ward, at the age of 67 years. Born in 1951, Ron was fourt".h in line of eight children. He was predeceased by his sister Carol; his parents, Rudy and Adelina; and his beloved wife Deirdre Maire Murphy. Ron is survived by his only son Jeffrey (Stacey); brothers, Richard (Donna), Allan (Kerstin); sisters, Linda, Connie (Mark), Corinne (Dorlan), Angela (Robert); and sister-in-law Sheena (Geoff). Also loved by numerous nephews and nieces, great-nephews and nieces, cousins and many lifelong friends, including recent companion Mira, who brought extra fun, joy and love to his life. Ron was one of those unique individuals who was fascinated with people and life, and the friendships he formed in his early years lasted throughout his short life. The testament to this was the steady array of friends, former work colleagues, family and relatives who visited him in hospital. Story after story of his wisdom, grace, understanding and compassion emerged from those visits. Ron's athletic prowess showed through when, at age 19, the ever-adventurous Ron journeyed to Belgium to play pro hockey in the European Cup League. He managed to score 77 goals in 51 games. While playing in the Junior League, he also played for Manitoba in the Canada Winter Games held in Saskatoon. With his long-time friends, he also was on the winning team of the Provincial Slow Pitch Tournament and was proud to win several National Slow Pitch Championships. His love of sports included downhill and cross-country skiing, golf, hiking, roller blading, and hunting, lacrosse, running and fishing. He regaled us with many a tale of his fly-in fishing escapades. He served as President of the West Kildonan Curling Club and continued to curl until his passing. Ron was also an adventurous cook and loved to entertain. One of the most joyous moments came with the birth of his son Jeff (mother Bev). Ron was very proud his son matured to the adult he is today. Younger years were spent camping, fishing and watching his son play soccer and follow in his footsteps with his love of hockey. In more recent years, Ron and Jeff took trips to Minneapolis to take in a Vikings game in their new stadium, and they travelled to Philadelphia for a Flyers game. Ron spent some 40 years in a management capacity with a few firms. He started with a well-respected established Winnipeg firm in the grain industry, Simon Day and retired with a well-respected Manitoba based company, PTI Transformers Manitoba Inc. Ron's managerial and organizational skills were valued at work and in everyday life. The family wishes to thank all who cared for Ron in these past few months, and in particular, faithful friend Rob Sproule, Dr. Mooney at Grace Hospital and the caring staff on the 8th floor Palliative Care Ward in St. Boniface Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation or an environmental charity of your choice. A celebration of Ron's life will be held at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 9, 2018. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200
